A Tease…

A little tease from one of my prompts:

Holden Radcliffe anxiously waited at the door of the Superiors Submarine, the culmination of his planning coming down to the trap he had sprung to a magnificent effect.   Coulson falling into line every step of the way.

Using Agent May and Director Mace as bait to lure the team to another one of the Russians base.  He’d hacked and listened to the team’s comms and knew exactly where they all were.  Knew Coulson would send Fitzsimmons to find the pieces of the Framework.

Coulson and Mack had found their missing friends in a cell.  May sleeping off the last of the drugs and effects of testing the Framework for him while Mace recovered from the beating he’d received.   While Radcliffe apphored violence he had to keep the Russian happy long enough to get what he wanted.

Daisy had fought the man in question based on how the base had been quaking before the gas had been set off.

Leaving Fitzsimmons in a small room, as far from the others as Radcliffe could arrange, trying to get bits of the Framework to track him down.   Coulson had sent a single agent to protect them, but none of them stood a chance when the gas was released and they were all knocked out within seconds.

Finally, he could hear approaching footsteps and his smile broadened.

First to arrive was a pair of Ivanov’s men carrying their battered and from the looks of it nearly dead leader.   “Take him to the medical bay, I’ll have AIDA tend to him once we are underway,” Radcliffe said with a dismissive wave.  He had more important matters to deal with after all.

AIDA and more thugs emerged from the Darkness next.  AIDA carrying Fitz and the thugs Simmons, the pair hanging limply in their arms.

“Well done,” Radcliffe praised and she stopped for Radcliffe to tenderly run a hand along Fitz’s forehead.   “Leo, my boy, you are finally going to come home and I’ll have everything I ever wanted.”

———————————————

Fitz woke with a start as he looked around the unfamiliar room.  He tried to pull himself up only to find he hands had been restrained and something cold and metallic was on his forehead.  The last thing he remembered was gas coming from the vents, he’d turned to reach for Jemma, watched her fall just out of his reach,  and AIDA walking in as he’d drifted way.

“Jemma!” He shouted and tugged at the restraints.  It was only when he looked down that he realized that his clothes had been changed into simple grey pajamas.

“Jemma!” he shouted again.

“Easy Leo,” Radcliffe said coming and moving to his side, his hand smoothing over Fitz’s forehead.  “You are perfectly safe, Jemma is too.  The last thing I am going to do is hurt you, either of you.”  His smile faltered slightly when Fitz tried to jerk away and at the pain in the engineer’s eyes.  He had already been hurt many times over by the man he’d seen as a father.

“What do you want?” Fitz hissed.  “Where are the others, what have you done with them?”

“I have what I want,” Radcliffe said turning his attention to the computer next to him “or I will here very shortly.  Just a few more things I need to get in order”.  Fitz knew in an instant his mind was being scanned.

“Why are you scanning me,” Fitz asked not even trying to hide fear and betrayal.  “And where are the others?  Jemma?”

Radcliffe sighed and watched as the information came in.   “The others are back at the base safe and sound.  Agent May has been returned unharmed….unfortunately, Director Mace is a bit worse for wear but will pull through just fine.”

Radcliffe paused only long enough to adjust the scan.  “Well everyone but Jemma,” he said as Fitz jumped in his retrains and tried to shake the device off his head.

“If you’ve hurt her,” Fitz said finally feeling he was making headway on the device before Radcliffe gently but firmly grabbed him by his chin and nodded to a monitor across the room.

Fitz gasped at the sight.  Jemma in the same pajamas he was hooked up in full to the Framework.  AIDA at her side attaching the wires and monitors.   “No, let her go,”   Fitz said.  “You have me, you don’t need her too.  I’ll do whatever you want.”

“Just sit back and relax, the mapping is complete.  Jemma is already in the Framework and settled into our new life quite marvelously.” Radcliffe said happily releasing Fitz when he’d stopped struggling.

Fitz couldn’t stop the stray tear that leaked from his eyes as he tore his gaze from Jemma and fixed it on his former friend with one last pleading look.

“Please,” he begged.  “You were like a father to me…I trusted you.”

The pleas fell on deaf ears as Radcliffe activated the program.  “That is precisely why I’m doing this Leo,” he said and Fitz felt his eyes widen at the change of his name.  “You are the son and apprentice I’d always dreamed up.  You and Jemma are going to be so happy there, I made sure you had everything you wanted, you deserved.  And you will help me fulfill my life’s work as the Darkhold has shown me the way to have it all.  Eternal life and the family I’ve always craved.”

Fitz could feel the pull and knew it was too late, the world around him fading to black and one last plea passing his lips before the darkness overcame him.

Happy Birthday to Octavia Butler, one of the most celebrated sci-fi writers of the last decade. I am so happy to have this small, but amazing collection of her work. [shiannesbooklist]

“No one was going to stop me from writing and no one had to really guide me towards science fiction. It was natural, really, that I would take that interest.” -Octavia Butler (1947-2006)
